Cases with an unknown source mean there are some people with COVID-19 who do not know where or how they were infected. This shows there are people infected with COVID-19 in the community who have not been diagnosed and is the reason why testing is critical. Notes

Last 24 hours refers to new cases and tests in the 24 hours from 8pm 26 February to 8pm 27 February, 2021. This week includes data for the 7 days ending 8pm 27 February 2021, last week includes data to the week ending 8pm 20 February 2021. Numbers of cases are based on date of notification to NSW Health.

The map shows the location of residence by Local Government Area (LGA) or local health district (LHD) of locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the last four weeks up to 8pm 27 February 2021. It is based on the date the person first developed symptoms. When no date of symptom onset is available (it is either under investigation by public health staff or the person tested positive without showing symptoms), the date of the positive test is used. Infections are not always acquired in the place of residence as people often travel outside their area for many reasons (e.g. work, school and shopping). Cases without a NSW residential address and people who were exposed interstate or overseas are not shown. Case counts may vary over time due to ongoing investigations and case review.

The NSW Sewage Surveillance Program tests untreated sewage for fragments of the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus at sewage treatment plant locations across NSW. The map also shows detections for the latest sample collected. It has been produced with assistance from utilities including Sydney Water and is an approximation of the catchment areas for the sewage treatment plants. It is provided for general information and public health advice. A single treatment plant may receive sewage from a number of sewage networks, and individual sewage networks may also be sampled. Test results from samples taken from individual network sites are not currently shown on this map. However, detections from these sites are listed at Locations where COVID-19 virus fragments have been detected in sewage.

The total NSW case count excludes 189 crew members who tested positive while on board a ship docked in NSW at the time of diagnosis. NSW Health reports on the number of tests notified instead of the number of people tested. In total, 3,769,087 people have been tested in NSW. Find out more about how NSW counts tests.
