Surgical wait times

Data notes
  • Chartered surgical facilities (CSFs): Privately-owned facilities used to deliver surgical services. Under the Health Facilities Act, some surgical services can be outsourced to CSFs under contract to AHS. Although most surgery is performed in hospitals, low risk surgeries can be safely performed in College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta-accredited CSFs. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta determine which surgical services cannot be provided in a CSF.
  • Scheduled surgeries in Chartered Surgical Facilities (CSFs): Surgeries that are not urgent or emergent and performed in CSFs rather than at acute care hospital operating rooms.
  • Scheduled surgeries were postponed during COVID-19 wave 1 from March 18 to May 3, 2020.
  • Due to typical lag with CSF data, cataract wait times are provided with a three-month lag.

Alberta Surgical Initiative (ASI) Dashboard

This dashboard supports and monitors key aspects of the Alberta Surgical Initiative (ASI), which aims to provide all Albertans the surgeries they need within time frames recommended by medical experts. Surgical capacity is a key indicator in ensuring Alberta’s health system has the overall capacity it needs as the health system responds to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional reporting will be added to the dashboard as the initiative moves forward and new information becomes available.
