What is Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)?

Coronavirus disease 2019 is a novel (new) strain of coronavirus that was first identified in Wuhan, Hebei Province, China.
According to the updated clinical and epidemiological features of the emerging virus, the novel coronavirus is considered to be very similar to many coronaviruses that are typically transmitted from animals to humans. However, this novel virus is reported to have been transmitted from human to human with a course of illness that ranges from mild to moderate symptoms in the majority of people with the infection. Nevertheless, severe symptoms and complications or even death may occur in people who suffer chronic diseases and lowered immunity.

There is currently no vaccine available to protect against the Coronavirus Disease 2019. Though there is no specific antiviral treatment available, people infected with the Coronavirus disease 2019 receive medical care to relieve their symptoms.

 19 April 2020

The Ministry of Public Health today announced 440 new confirmed cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) and the recovery of 8 cases of the disease, bringing the total cases of recovery in the State of Qatar to 518 cases.

Most of the new cases are due to migrant workers who had been identified through tracing and were found to have mixed with infected cases, while the lowest percentage of the new cases came from citizens and residents who had contracted the virus from family members. New infected cases have been isolation and are receiving the necessary medical care.

Also, 8 cases of similar recovery were recorded, bringing the total cases of corona virus in the State of Qatar to 518.

The Ministry stated that the noticeable increase in the number of confirmed new cases of infection is due to several reasons, including the fact that the spread of the virus has begun to enter the peak stage (i.e. the highest wave that affects the country), which may continue to increase for a period before it begins to decline. It is also due to the steady increase in the efforts of the Ministry Health and its medical teams to track the transmission chains of the coronavirus and expand the surveillance process, including of groups of contacts with people who were previously diagnosed with the disease. All of this has contributed to the early detection of many cases of infection and reduced the spread of the virus.

The Ministry of Public Health also requests all members of society to stay at home and cooperate fully with all health guidelines and preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection, including sticking to social and physical distancing guidelines. The Ministry also recommends that you regularly visit the MOPH website for the most up-to-date guidance on how to stay safe, including the guidelines related to the use of facemasks which was recently added on the site.
