Current Situation

Public health officials advise one new case of COVID-19 was identified as of 9:30 a.m. today, bringing the total number of lab-confirmed positive and probable positive cases in Manitoba to 254. In addition, a sixth death has been reported, a woman in her 80s. No other patient-specific information is available at this time.

The data also shows:

  • eight individuals are currently hospitalized, which includes five individuals in intensive care;
  • 105 active cases and 144 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19; and
  • the number of deaths due to COVID-19 is now six.

On March 20, 2020, the Manitoba government declared a province-wide state of emergency under The Emergency Measures Act, to protect the health and safety of all Manitobans and reduce the spread of COVID-19. This state of emergency is being extended for an additional 30 days.

This builds on the expansion of public health orders that limit the size of gatherings, close restaurants and non-critical businesses, require people entering Manitoba to self-isolate for 14 days and restrict travel to northern Manitoba (north of the 53rd parallel of latitude).

Extending the state of emergency will ensure measures can stay in place to protect the health of people across the province.

  • * A confirmed positive case has tested positive for COVID-19 at a laboratory. Confirmed case - A person with a laboratory confirmation of infection with the virus that causes COVID-19 performed at a community, hospital or reference laboratory (NML or a provincial public health laboratory) running a validated assay. This consists of detection of at least one specific gene target by a NAAT assay (e.g. real-time PCR or nucleic acid sequencing).
  • ** A probable case is a person who is showing symptoms (fever, cough) and meets exposure criteria (travel, close contact with another confirmed case or is living in a facility experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19). The individual may or may not have been tested at the time they are declared a probable case. For current screening and testing advice, please refer to Screening tool
  • Public health officials notify people who have tested positive for COVID-19 as soon as possible.
  • Recovered is based on the assumption that a case is recovered 14 days after the onset of symptoms.

If you have a positive test result, public health officials will call you directly. That is the start of the public health investigation process. In addition, if these public health investigations identify you as a possible close contact, they will call you and provide advice on how to self-monitor for symptoms and self-isolate.

If your test result is negative, it may take longer for you to be advised of your test results. If you have been exposed to COVID-19 through travel or close contact with a case, ensure you self-isolate for 14 days after symptoms develop. If you haven't been exposed to a case or travel, stay home until all your symptoms have been gone for 24 hours. If you are a health care worker, contact Occupational Health to determine a date of return for work.







Data Notes:

  • The Public Health Information Management System (PHIMS) is a surveillance and reporting tool that brings together positive laboratory results for all notifiable diseases and diseases with case and contact investigation information from the regional health authorities and or responsible organizations. PHIMS contains information on individuals such as demographics (e.g. age, region of residence and sex), risk factors, outcomes and co-infections. Data included in the interactive data application are up-to-date as of 9:30 am of the date of posting.
  • Information such as hospitalizations and ICU admissions are received through enhanced case reporting by provincial regional health authorities. Data included in the interactive data application are up-to-date as of 12:01 a.m. of the date of posting.

As of April 16, 2020 (10:00 am), 30,659 confirmed cases, 11 probable cases and 1,250 deaths associated with COVID-19 have been confirmed in Canada. Cases have been reported in all provinces and territories across Canada, with the exception of Nunavut. Probable cases have all been reported in Manitoba. Deaths associated with COVID-19 have been reported in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
