How is the data collected?

As of 31 May 2020, 1 398 425 cases have been reported in the EU/EEA and the UK: United Kingdom (272 826), Spain (239 228), Italy (232 664), Germany (181 482), France (151 496), Belgium (58 186), Netherlands (46 257), Sweden (37 113), Portugal (32 203), Ireland (24 929), Poland (23 571), Romania (19 133), Austria (16 638), Denmark (11 633), Czechia (9 230), Norway (8 411), Finland (6 826), Luxembourg (4 016), Hungary (3 867), Greece (2 915), Bulgaria (2 513), Croatia (2 246), Estonia (1 865), Iceland (1 806), Lithuania (1 670), Slovakia (1 521), Slovenia (1 473), Latvia (1 065), Cyprus (943), Malta (616) and Liechtenstein (83).

As of 31 May 2020, 164 766 deaths have been reported in the EU/EEA and the UK: United Kingdom (38 376), Italy (33 340), France (28 771), Spain (27 125), Belgium (9 453), Germany (8 500), Netherlands (5 951), Sweden (4 395), Ireland (1 651), Portugal (1 396), Romania (1 253), Poland (1 061), Austria (668), Denmark (571), Hungary (524), Czechia (319), Finland (316), Norway (236), Greece (175), Bulgaria (140), Luxembourg (110), Slovenia (108), Croatia (103), Lithuania (70), Estonia (67), Slovakia (28), Latvia (24), Cyprus (17), Iceland (10), Malta (7) and Liechtenstein (1).

NOTE: on 29/05/2020, the increase reported by France is due to the implementation of a new laboratory-based surveillance system of COVID-19 (SI-DEP) since 13 May with a significant increase of the laboratory coverage, allowing the inclusion of retrospective cases diagnosed since that date.

How ECDC collects and processes COVID-19 data

Every day between 6.00 and 10.00 CET, a team of epidemiologists screens up to 500 relevant sources to collect the latest figures. The data screening is followed by ECDC’s standard epidemic intelligence process for which every single data entry is validated and documented in an ECDC database.
