COVID-19 situation update for the EU/EEA and the UK, as of 9 December 2020

Epidemiological update

ECDC will switch to a weekly reporting schedule for the COVID-19 situation worldwide and in the EU/EEA and the UK on 17 December this year. Hence, all daily updates will be discontinued from 14 December. ECDC will publish updates on the number of cases and deaths reported worldwide and aggregated by week every Thursday. The weekly data will be available as downloadable files in the following formats: XLSX, CSV, JSON and XML. As an exception, the weekly updates for the end-of-year festive season will be published on 23 December and 30 December 2020.

As of 09 December 2020, 14 320 392 cases have been reported in the EU/EEA and the UK: France (2 309 621), Italy (1 757 394), United Kingdom (1 750 241), Spain (1 702 328), Germany (1 218 524), Poland (1 076 180), Belgium (594 436), Netherlands (569 747), Czechia (556 927), Romania (524 675), Portugal (325 071), Austria (305 688), Sweden (297 732), Hungary (259 588), Bulgaria (168 165), Croatia (154 852), Slovakia (119 232), Greece (118 045), Denmark (94 799), Slovenia (87 936), Lithuania (80 556), Ireland (74 682), Norway (38 703), Luxembourg (38 476), Finland (28 242), Latvia (22 104), Estonia (15 510), Cyprus (13 286), Malta (10 699), Iceland (5 506) and Liechtenstein (1 447).

As of 09 December 2020, 356 836 deaths have been reported in the EU/EEA and the UK: United Kingdom (62 033), Italy (61 240), France (56 352), Spain (46 646), Poland (20 592), Germany (19 932), Belgium (17 507), Romania (12 660), Netherlands (9 762), Czechia (9 136), Sweden (7 200), Hungary (6 280), Bulgaria (5 156), Portugal (5 041), Austria (3 907), Greece (3 194), Croatia (2 298), Ireland (2 097), Slovenia (1 311), Slovakia (1 046), Denmark (901), Lithuania (704), Finland (425), Norway (361), Luxembourg (360), Latvia (288), Malta (157), Estonia (137), Cyprus (68), Iceland (28) and Liechtenstein (17).

*United Kingdom: from 3 October 2020, due to a technical issue, COVID-19 cases from 24 September to 1 October will be reported by British authorities in the coming days.

On 2 October 2020, authorities in Ireland retrocorrected the total number of COVID-19 deaths leading to a negative value for the deaths reported on 3 October 2020.

From end of August 2020, Swedish authorities are performing daily data consolidation leading to data retro-corrections. From week 38, the Swedish Public Health Agency will update COVID-19 daily data four times per week on Tuesday–Friday. Hence, the cumulative figures and related outputs include cases and deaths from the previous 14 days with available data at the time of data collection.

As of 24 August 2020, Authorities in Luxembourg report COVID-19 cases and deaths from their resident population only. Therefore, the difference with the figure from 27 August is translated into a negative value for the cases and deaths reported on 28 August 2020
