Updates on COVID-19 in Republic of Korea
30 July 2020
□ As of 0:00, 30 July 2020, the total number of confirmed cases is 14,269 (including 2,374 imported cases), of which 13,132 cases have been discharged from isolation. There are 7 new local cases, 11 new imported cases, and 0 new deaths.

□ The current state* of major local clusters as of today (as of 12:00, 30 July) are as follows:
* The specific figures below may differ from the daily reported statistics (which are based on figures as of 0:00 today) or figures disclosed by local municipalities due to factors such as report timing and differences in the time period considered
○ Related to the Gangseo Central Daycare Center in Gangseo-gu, Seoul City, 1 additional case (facility user’s family member) was confirmed. In total, 29* cases have been confirmed.
* facility users = 17 cases, facility users’ family members = 4 cases, acquaintances = 6 cases, trainee = 1 case, family member of trainee = 1 case
○ Related to an acquaintance meeting in Songpa-gu, Seoul City, 1 additional case was confirmed. In total, 8* cases have been confirmed.
* Seoul = 6 cases, Gyeonggi = 2 cases
○ Related to the Seoul City Hall, out of 166 individuals who worked on the 11th floor, 158 individuals tested negative (testing underway for the rest), and out of the individuals who frequently visited the 11th floor, testing is underway for 88 individuals who wished to get tested.
○ Related to a camping group in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do, 6 cases from 3 families were confirmed positive out of the 6 families that belonged to the group. Epidemiological investigation to determine contacts and the route of transmission is underway.

○ Related to the individual who defected to North Korea, based on the information shared from a related government agency (Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency), no records of COVID-19 testing or contact with confirmed cases have been found regarding the defector or the 2 contacts in self-quarantine.
- In addition, a list of additional contacts (8 individuals) has been received from the National Police Agency on 29 July. Sample collection and testing will take place for the 8 individuals.

※ Environmental samples collected from the defector’s belongings (16 items, including clothing) tested negative for COVID-19 on 29 July.
□ As of 0:00, 30 July, there were 11 imported cases, of which, 8 were confirmed at the point of entry, and 3 were confirmed in the community while in mandatory self-quarantine after arrival. The 11 cases consisted of 9 Korean nationals and 2 foreign nationals.
○ The (presumed) location of infection acquisition of the 11 new imported cases are: Americas (2) (US 2) and Asia excluding China (9) (Philippines 4, Saudi Arabia 3, Iraq 1, Uzbekistan 1).
○ KCDC revealed that vessels that departed from Russia have been subject to on-board quarantine since 1 July, and that on-board quarantine has been conducted on 191 vessels (74%) out of 259 vessels that have entered a Korean harbor departing from Russia between 1 July to 29 July.

* Exempted vessels include vessels transporting ship supplies and vessels transporting fuel and potable water, etc.
- In addition to vessels departing from Russia, on-board quarantine measures will be conducted on vessels departing from countries subject to strengthened infectious disease control and prevention (6 countries) starting today.
- Starting 20 July, complete diagnostic tests that were required for sailors on Russian vessels that require frequent contact with harbor workers are now required for sailors on vessels coming from countries subject to strengthened infectious disease control and prevention.
□ A Healthcare Future Forum, hosted by Korea Health Industry Korea Health Industry Development Institute, titled “COVID-19 Vaccine: Global Development and Procurement Strategies” will be held tomorrow (3 p.m.).
□ A total of 1,098 fully recovered patients (including 59 additional participants) have signed up to donate their plasma for the development of COVID-19 plasma therapy. Plasma collection has been completed for 733 (including 73 additional participants) of the donors as of today.
○ KCDC expressed gratitude for the people who signed up to donate their plasma, and encouraged more eligible people* to participate.

□ KCDC has reviewed the safety violation reports made through the Safety e-Report and advised the public to continue to follow infection prevention guidelines including proper mask wearing.

○ Major examples of violations include group activities without facemasks in construction sites, exorcism sites, and gyms.
○ Mask wearing is an effective at protecting both the wearer and others by preventing transmission of respiratory droplets.
- Masks need to be worn in indoor spaces where 2m distancing is difficult to maintain.
- Mask wearing is also recommended for outdoor spaces where 2m distancing is impossible.
- Proper mask wearing tips:
▴ Cover mouth and nose completely
▴ Refrain from touching mask surface
▴ Wash hands before and after putting on or touching mask
□ In light of the 6 cases related to Hongchun camping group, Gangwon province today, KCDC expressed concern regarding infection spread during summer holiday season.
COVID-19 prevention guidelines for safe and relaxing summer holidays: - 3 do’s: ① Wear a mask when indoors ② Minimize stay time in rest areas and restaurants ③ Maintain a 2m distance (1m minimum) from others
- 3 don’ts: ① Do not go outdoors if you feel sick, including when you have a fever or a cough ② Do not visit closed, crowded, and close-contact settings (3C’s), such as PC cafes and karaokes ③ Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands |
□ KCDC advised caution as water damage from the rainy season may also cause an increase of various waterborne and mosquito-borne infectious diseases.
○ To prevent the major infectious diseases that occur in the rainy season, KCDC stressed that:
▴Food and drink should be thoroughly heated before consumption
▴Cooked food should not be kept for long
▴Individual hygiene such as handwashing is very important
○ In areas with flood and water damage, leptospirosis or contact dermatitis may occur due to wounds.
* Leptospirosis may be transmitted through wounded skin exposure to water, soil, or food contaminated animal urine. Major symptoms include headache, jaundice, redness of eyes, muscle pain
