Updates on COVID-19 in Republic of Korea

□ As of 0:00, 25 August 2020, the total number of confirmed cases is 17,945 (including 2,750 imported cases), of which 14,286 cases have been discharged from isolation. There are 264 new local cases, 16 new imported cases, and 1 new death.

□ Major local clusters as of 12:00 today (25 August):

○ Related to Sarang Jeil Church in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul City, 40 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 915 cases have been confirmed.
- 856 cases total in capital area (Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi)
- 59 cases total in other areas (Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Gyeongbuk)
- To date, 120 confirmed cases of further transmissions from Sarang Jeil Church have been found related to 22 venues. Transmission is likely ongoing. Epidemiological investigation is underway of 186 facilities to prevent further transmission.
○ Related to August 15 Seoul rally, 17 additional cases were confirmed from investigation. In total, 193 cases have been confirmed.
- Cases with no relation to Sarang Jeil Church found according to basic investigation; may change with new findings in further investigation
○ Related to Muhan 9roup, 19 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 44 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to a real estate auction firm in Jung-gu, Seoul City, first case was confirmed on 21 August and 11 additional cases were confirmed. In total, 12 cases have been confirmed. Investigation is underway.
○ Related to Woori Jeil Church in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi Province, 1 additional case was confirmed while under self-quarantine. In total, 183 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Starbucks in Paju-si, Gyeonggi Province, 2 additional cases were confirmed while under quarantine. In total, 66 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Salad Days in Anyang-si, Gyeonggi Province, first case was confirmed on 17 August and 9 additional cases were confirmed. In total, 10 cases have been confirmed. Additional epidemiological investigation is ongoing.
○ Related to Galilee Church in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon City, 3 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 41 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Incheon Seo-gu Office, first case was confirmed on 22 August and 7 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 8 cases have been confirmed.
○ Related to Gan Jaeul Middle School in Seo-gu, Incheon City, first case was confirmed on 21 August and 3 additional cases were confirmed from contact investigation. In total, 4 cases (3 teachers and 1 student) have been confirmed. Investigation on chain of transmission is underway.
○ Related to Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital in Cheonan-si, Chungnam Province, 7 additional cases were confirmed. In total, 17 cases have been confirmed.
□ Severe/critical cases statistics last 2 weeks:
○ New cases aged 60 or above increased from 24% (29 July – 11 August) to 32% (12-25 August)
○ Severe/critical cases have tripled since 19 August (from 12 to 38)
○ Cumulative 310 deaths; 302 had underlying medical conditions such as hypertension or diabetes
- Case fatality rate: 22.2% for ages 80+; 7.39% for ages 70-79; 1.58% for ages 60-69
- 53.9% (167 cases) of transmission linked to social welfare facility or hospital
○ People aged 60 or older who have higher risk of developing severe symptoms from COVID-19 infection are advised to refrain from going out and get tested as soon as possible if having fever or respiratory symptoms. Facilities frequently used by elderly are advised to ventilate and disinfect regularly and ensure everyone wears masks at all times.
□ As of 0:00, 25 August, there were 16 imported cases, of which 3 were confirmed at the point of entry, and 13 were confirmed in the community while in mandatory self-quarantine after arrival. 3 were Korean nationals and 13 foreign nationals.

□ Social Distancing Level 2 has been extended to the whole nation effective 24 August. Follow the guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Public Guidance for Level 2 Social Distancing ➀ Do not go to work if feeling sick - Call KCDC call center by dialing 1339 or contact local public health center or screening clinic ➁ Postpone or cancel non-essential outings, social gatherings, events, or travel - Essential travel includes getting medical care, buying necessities, or to going to work - At restaurants or cafes, order takeout rather than dining in - Home training or outdoor exercising is recommended in place of going to gyms - For social activities, utilize PC or smartphones to have online meetings - Use online shopping over physical stores ➂ If going out, wear mask and follow infection prevention guidelines - Do not visit crowded, confined, or close-contact places with poor ventilation - Wear mask indoors as well as outdoors whenever 2m distancing can’t be maintained - Ensure mask covers mouth and nose completely and do not touch mask - Keep mask on except to drink or eat - Maintain physical distance from other people (2m recommended, 1m minimum) - No droplet-producing activities such as shouting, singing out loud, or chanting - No physical contact with others such as handshakes or hugs |
