Public Health Wales statement on Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak

Dr Robin Howe, Incident Director for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said:

“The number of positive Coronavirus cases remains extremely high in Wales and is cause for serious concern.

“All of Wales remains in lockdown. We ask that the public adopts the same mindset for this lockdown as they did in March 2020. We understand that people are fatigued but with a more transmissible variant of coronavirus circulating across Wales it is vital that we all keep to the lockdown restrictions in place.

“This means stay at home. If exercising outdoors, please do this alone or with members of your household or support bubble. Shop online but if you do need to visit essential retail do this alone. If you must leave home keep your distance, wash your hands regularly, and wear a face mask.

“Public Health Wales urges everyone to follow the rules, to avoid transmission of Coronavirus and to protect everyone in our communities, including the most vulnerable.

“Public Health Wales is working with UK partners to investigate and respond to the new variant of coronavirus identified in Wales. The new variant is easier to spread and the public should remain highly vigilant in measures to prevent transmission including maintaining social distancing, regularly handwashing and wearing of face coverings. Though the new variant is more infectious, there is no evidence that it leads to more severe disease.

“The roll-out of the Pfizer BioNTech and AstraZeneca Coronavirus vaccines continues in Wales with the the recently Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved Moderna vaccine to be incorporated into the programme soon.

“From Monday 11 January 2021, daily vaccination data will be published on the Public Health Wales dashboard. The headline summary will include daily cumulative numbers of individuals who have received a first and second vaccination dose. More detailed vaccination data including numbers by health board area will be updated on a weekly basis every Thursday. Public Health Wales is working closely with the Welsh Government as they deploy Coronavirus vaccinations through local health boards. Welsh Government is leading on the deployment of the vaccine in Wales.”

“Vaccinating the adult population of Wales, to protect people from severe disease, is a significant task, and the vaccine will take time to reach everyone. The effects of the vaccines may not be seen nationally for some time, and we must continue to follow the advice on keeping Wales safe. 

“The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has issued a short statement outlining the case for optimising the existing vaccine programme within the UK to achieve maximum short term impact. The JCVI advises initially prioritising delivery of the first vaccine dose as this is highly likely to have a greater public health impact in the short term and reduce the number of preventable deaths from COVID-19.

“Given the data available, and evidence from the use of many other vaccines, Public Health Wales fully supports the JCVI advice to increase a maximum interval between the first and second doses of 12 weeks for both Pfizer BioNTech and AstraZeneca vaccines.

“Members of the public should not phone your GP, pharmacy or hospital asking when they will get a vaccine. When someone is in one of the groups eligible for the vaccine, they will be invited to attend a dedicated clinic which will have been set up to ensure patient safety and that of the healthcare professionals.

“If you or a member of your household develop a cough, fever or change in sense of taste or smell, you must self-isolate immediately and book a free Coronavirus test, either by calling 119 or by clicking here.

Dywedodd Dr Robin Howe, Cyfarwyddwr Digwyddiad ar gyfer yr ymateb i'r achos o'r Coronafeirws Newydd (COVID-19) yn Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru:

“Mae nifer yr achosion positif o Coronafeirws yn parhau i fod yn uchel iawn yng Nghymru ac mae’n destun pryder difrifol.

“Mae'r cyfyngiadau symud yn parhau trwy Gymru gyfan. Gofynnwn i’r cyhoedd fabwysiadu’r un meddylfryd ar gyfer y cyfyngiadau symud cyfredol ag y gwnaethant ym mis Mawrth 2020. Deallwn fod pobl wedi cael digon, ond tra mae amrywiolyn mwy trosglwyddadwy o’r Coronafeirws yn mynd ar led yng Nghymru, mae’n hanfodol ein bod ni i gyd yn glynu wrth y cyfyngiadau symud sydd ar waith.

“Mae hyn yn golygu aros gartref. Os byddwch yn gwneud ymarfer corff yn yr awyr agored, gwnewch hyn ar eich pen eich hun neu gydag aelodau o’ch aelwyd neu’ch swigen gefnogaeth. Dylech siopa ar-lein ond os oes angen i chi ymweld â mannau manwerthu hanfodol, gwnewch hyn ar eich pen eich hun. Os oes rhaid i chi adael eich aelwyd, cadwch eich pellter, golchwch eich dwylo’n rheolaidd a gwisgwch fasg wyneb.

“Mae Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru yn annog pawb i ddilyn y rheolau, i osgoi trosglwyddo Coronafeirws ac i ddiogelu pawb yn ein cymunedau, gan gynnwys y rhai mwyaf agored i niwed.

“Mae Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru yn gweithio gyda phartneriaid yn y DU i ymchwilio ac i ymateb i’r amrywiolyn newydd o Coronafeirws a nodwyd yng Nghymru. Mae’r amrywiolyn newydd yn lledaenu’n haws a dylai’r cyhoedd lynu wrth y mesurau’n ofalus er mwyn atal trosglwyddiad, gan gynnwys cadw pellter cymdeithasol, golchi dwylo’n rheolaidd a gwisgo gorchuddion wyneb. Er bod yr amrywiolyn newydd yn fwy heintus, nid oes unrhyw dystiolaeth ei fod yn arwain at afiechyd mwy difrifol.

“Mae’r gwaith o gyflwyno’r brechlynnau Coronafeirws Pfizer BioNTech ac AstraZeneca yn parhau yng Nghymru, a chaiff y brechlyn Moderna sydd wedi’i gymeradwyo’n ddiweddar gan yr Asiantaeth Rheoleiddio Meddyginiaethau a Chynhyrchion Gofal Iechyd (MHRA) ei gynnwys yn y rhaglen maes o law.

“O ddydd Llun 11 Ionawr 2021, cyhoeddir data brechu dyddiol ar ddangosfwrdd Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru. Bydd crynodeb y pennawd yn cynnwys nifer cronnus dyddiol o unigolion sydd wedi derbyn dos cyntaf ac ail ddos o’r brechlyn. Caiff data brechu manylach, gan gynnwys niferoedd yn ôl ardal bwrdd iechyd, eu diweddaru yn wythnosol bob dydd Iau. Mae Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru yn gweithio’n agos gyda Llywodraeth Cymru wrth iddynt ddarparu brechiadau Coronafeirws drwy’r byrddau iechyd lleol. Mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn arwain y gwaith o ddarparu’r brechlyn yng Nghymru.”

“Mae brechu oedolion Cymru er mwyn amddiffyn pobl rhag afiechyd difrifol yn dasg sylweddol a bydd yn cymryd amser i frechu pawb. Efallai na fydd effeithiau’r brechlynnau i’w gweld yn genedlaethol am beth amser, a rhaid i ni barhau i ddilyn y cyngor ar gadw Cymru’n ddiogel. 

“Mae’r Cyd-bwyllgor ar Imiwneiddio a Brechu (JCVI) wedi cyhoeddi datganiad byr yn amlinellu’r achos dros optimeiddio’r rhaglen frechlyn gyfredol yn y DU i gael yr effaith tymor byr fwyaf posibl. Mae'r JCVI yn cynghori blaenoriaethu cyflwyno'r dos cyntaf o’r brechlyn i ddechrau gan fod hyn yn debygol iawn o gael mwy o effaith ar iechyd y cyhoedd yn y tymor byr a lleihau nifer y marwolaethau o ganlyniad i COVID-19 y gellir eu hatal.

“O ystyried y data sydd ar gael, a'r dystiolaeth o'r defnydd o lawer o frechlynnau eraill, mae Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru yn llwyr gefnogi cyngor JCVI i gynyddu'r cyfnod mwyaf rhwng y dos cyntaf a'r ail ddos o 12 wythnos ar gyfer y brechlynnau Pfizer BioNTech ac AstraZeneca.

“Ni ddylai aelodau’r cyhoedd ffonio eu meddyg teulu, fferyllfa nag ysbyty yn gofyn pryd fyddant yn cael brechlyn. Pan fydd rhywun yn un o'r grwpiau sy'n gymwys i gael y brechlyn, fe'u gwahoddir i fynd i glinig pwrpasol a fydd wedi'i sefydlu i sicrhau diogelwch cleifion a gweithwyr gofal iechyd proffesiynol.

“Os byddwch chi neu aelod o'ch aelwyd yn datblygu peswch, twymyn neu newid i synnwyr blasu neu arogli, rhaid i chi hunanynysu ar unwaith ac archebu prawf Coronafeirws am ddim naill ai drwy ffonio 119 neu drwy glicio yma.

“Os ydych i fod i deithio y tu allan i’r DU, byddwch yn ymwybodol o’r sefyllfa sy’n newid a chadwch lygad ar wefan Y Swyddfa Dramor a Chymanwlad am y manylion mwyaf diweddar.
