Situation Summary

  • Virginia has 5 presumptive positive cases of COVID-19. 
  • The Virginia Department of Health is monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness, called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.
  • Cases of COVID-19 are also being reported in a growing number of countries internationally, including the United States, where the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed on January 21, 2020 in a traveler who had recently returned from Wuhan.

COVID-19 Testing and Public Health Monitoring Data

VDH is closely monitoring and investigating reports of illness potentially associated with COVID-19. Only people who are sick and meet specific epidemiologic criteria are tested for COVID-19. The number of people who meet these criteria is updated every weekday between 10 and 11 am. VDH is only reporting Virginia residents who were tested for COVID-19 in the United States. To protect patient confidentiality, VDH will not provide additional details about people who were tested.
